Wreck Diving is a sport that is named from two longer English words.

I’m going to take a look at those words, and the sport of wreck diving and what divers do.

Thanks for joining me today on the les perras podcast, episode 294 and for today’s extensive english listening topic.

I’m going to talk about wreck wreck diving

This word wreck diving puts together two words, wreck and diving.

The words They each come from two other two word expressions.

‘Diving’ comes from scuba diving, which you probably know.

The word ‘wreck’ comes from ‘ship wreck’ - this is a ship that has sunk underwater.

It was wrecked and stopped floating and sank.

Scuba divers enjoy wreck diving for the interesting diving experience it gives.

They are not limited to ship wrecks.

There are also airplane wrecks.

And the wrecks of cars or trucks that were carried on the ships that wrecked.

Too Deep But many shipwrecks are in water that is too deep for divers.

They are inaccessible. Divers want to dive wrecks that are accessible.

Solution

The solution?

Make wrecks.

You see, not all of the wrecks were wrecks by accident.

Bahrain scuttled a 747 to make an underwater diving park.

You can go diving to the wreck of a 747 underwater.

This is now the world’s first underwater theme park.

Of course you need to be a certified scuba diver to go diving in the park but its easy to get the certification you need.

Now, you don’t need to go to Bahrain to an underwater theme park to go wreck diving.

There are wrecks all over the world.

Still, it’s quite a specialty sport, and you will almost certainly need to travel to do this sport.

Dangerous

Also, it can be dangerous, because the wrecks are often deeper than lots of recreational diving goes.

They can be dangerous for another reason: going inside the wreck.

Diving underwater becomes quite a bit more dangerous when you go under something like a rock or the roof of a boat.

Going inside the wreck is quite dangerous and you need to take extra precautions.

It sounds exciting to me.

I like exciting sports and I know I like scuba diving.

I’d love to try it.
